Special Occasions
My current project is called "Special Occasions", where I use the clothes we keep in the back of our closets and the memories/stories attached to those clothes. The pieces consist of painted elements on canvas. The clothes are applied as collage/low relief with layering of gauzy/silky/translucent materials. Approximate size is 80"x60" (7’x5’). They are unstretched; hung on a rod. I tend to work in series on large ideas because it takes more than one work to completely explore a concept. The first piece resolves technical difficulties; the other pieces, then, delve deeper into the concept for the work. The ideas continue; new pieces are added. I am starting the project with my own clothes/memories, but I want this series to be much more than about me. I will be soliciting clothes/memories from other people. Community/artist interaction will be an integral part of these works. This will be my community outreach part of the residency.
